When I was 20, the music of bands like Throbbing Gristle and Faust was every bit as important to me as that of The Byrds, Velvets, Josef K and Orange Juice. Indeed, the first demo tape I made featured drones, samples and industrial noise as well as prototype versions of “Every Conversation” and “In the Rain”. I soon realised, though, that the two types of music didn’t gel together, and the weird stuff had to go. So it’s a pleasure, after all these years, to properly acknowledge how important this music actually was to me.
